In direct response to the blog titled the same name by Papa Roux (http://paparouxindy.com/papablogs/?p=148) I am also not a food critic or a reviewer and I am not even a great blogger. I do have my opinions on my favorite places to eat and am unabashed to share those opinions. I have had a bit of experience now even getting to photograph food for a couple of local vendors and have found it to be quite exciting not to mention that I usually some type of meal out of the deal. Mmm… SWEET!
Most food places are the same in the fact that they provide something to eat for a particular price, whether it be high or low. There are a few restaurants however, that stand above the rest. Papa Roux, on Indianapolis’ East Side at 10th and Post is one of those places.
Driving by, it looks like a hole in the wall place stuck amidst a body shop and several other businesses. Walking in during a lunch hour reminds me of Katz’s Deli in New York City, bustling workers and people happily sharing tables with strangers just to get a chance to eat one of the infamous Po-Boy sandwiches or to find a way to enjoy a bowl of Jambalaya. No corporate food here! Every recipe is created and cooked by Papa and his wife (lovingly called Mama) in the kitchen that you can see into from the counter.
Papa recently told a story of a restaurateur who visited his restaurant with disparaging words about the east side. The story is summarized by Papa as follows:
"We even had a visit from a fairly prominent local, a guy with several restaurants around town, who told me he felt bad that we got stuck in such a dumpy part of town, and that he had decided not to put faith in “the economy of the Eastside.”
Papa has since proven this same man wrong over and over. Not only has his restaurant become a success but Papa Roux continues to find ways to revitalize the East Sides economy with local vendors.
Most recently he has provided a way to eat for free at his place by simply following a few small directions on his blog with another local business.
I also say “bullocks” on the failure of the East Side's economy. And, I agree that if it is in trouble it is because we send our money out of state or even out of the country by taking pictures with corporate giants such as Sears, Target, Walmart, Picture People or even Olan Mills. Do you remember your last family portrait there? I bet they don’t.
So here is my response to Papa: I will help you get the pictures you want and leave you the extra cash to try Papa Roux too!
Until the 8th of April, dine at Papa Roux and bring me a receipt and you can get your family pictures taken at your favorite location for $20 (normally $125). No high pressure sales for prints you don’t want, no hidden sitting fees, and no limits on the number of people (or pets)!
Great Food, Great Pictures, Great memories!
